A Family with Unusual Vision Problems
Today Dr. Glidden received the following question: A parent and two children in my family have been diagnosed with Anisometropia Refractory and Amblyopia Acuity Vision, in which they have unequal vision between the two eyes. One eye is more farsighted than the other. The two children are 13 and 5. They have received various opinions such as patching with glasses, vision therapy, and listening to CDs to rewire the brain. The 13-year-old received vision therapy for 2 years (during ages 6 and 7) and was told that glasses were not required, however someone else told her parents that she needs glasses 24/7 and anyone with this condition will need glasses 24/7, and all affected should undergo vision therapy. Vision therapy is $5000 plus per person and they have spent at least $10,000 in the past. Generally insurance does not cover this. My question is, can this condition be remedied with vitamins and supplements without glasses and vision therapy? Thank you for your time and help.

Anisometropia is a condition caused by two eyes having significant differences in refractive power, meaning one eye has much poorer vision than the other. Each eye can be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or a combination of both, called antimetropia. Amblyopia, also called “lazy eye” is a disorder of sight. It is due to an abnormal development of vision in infancy and results in decreased vision in an eye that otherwise appears normal.
Dr. Glidden Responds
It’s exasperating that we pay these MD “experts” so much in insurance premiums, and yet they have no idea what causes a problem and have diametrically opposed ideas as to how to treat it. Make sure when you see a doctor that you demand a timetable as to when there will be positive results. If there is no possibility of a timetable, find another doctor who will give you one, and hold that doctor accountable. Anisometropia and Amblyopia can be traced back to an unhealthy skull bone.
